Part-Time Firefighter Position
The Shelbyville Fire Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Part-Time Firefighter. This position is a part-time hourly professional fire and rescue position that reports to the Fire Captain. Part-time firefighters are scheduled on a monthly and “as needed” basis and may (if available) respond on larger incidents or special events.
Minimum Qualifications at Date of Application:
- A High School Diploma or equivalent
- A valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky
- 150-Hour certification established and certified by the Kentucky Fire Commission.
- 400-Hour certification and the IFSAC Firefighter I and II established and certified by the Kentucky Fire Commission are preferred, but not required.
- Emergency Medical Technician Certification (EMT-B or EMT- A or P) as established and certified by KY Board of Emergency Medical Services (KBEMS)
- Certificates from the US Department of Homeland Security/FEMA that include: NIMS IS-100, 200, 700, and 800.
- A CPAT card as certified by the Kentucky Fire Commission at date of hire. The CPAT requirement may be waived for a lateral transfer who is currently employed with or who has previously been employed by a Kentucky fire department prior to January 1, 2013 in accordance with KRS Chapters 67, 75, and 95; and who has not been out of the fire service for more than one (1) year
Hiring Process:
- Written test of 100 questions from IFSTA Essentials 6th Edition
- Department Physical Agility Test (normally administered on same date as the written test)
- Oral Interview board
- Background and reference review
- Pre-employment Physical exam and drug screening
All gear, physicals, and training are provided by the department. Part-time pay is $10.75 per hour. Part-time firefighters who are already enrolled in the C.E.R.S. pension system will also get pension credit for time worked as a part-time firefighter in this position.
